Menopause is a significant transition in our life. It involves natural hormonal changes, especially a decrease in estrogen and progesterone levels, which can lead to various physical and emotional symptoms.

There are three stages to menopause. These 3 stages are called ‘the menopause’ as opposed to menopause.

1st stage is perimenopause – which can be up to 15 years prior to menopause.

2nd stage is menopause – it is the moment in time you have not had a period for 12 months

3rd stage is post menopause – which is for the rest of our lives. We can still experience fluctuations of hormones and a background hormonal cycle in post menopause.

As estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate and eventually decline, many women experience various symptoms such as mood swings, hot flashes, and sleep problems. Yet some women don’t experience any of these symptoms.

Perimenopause and menopause get a bad rap because of the symptoms of hormonal imbalance on our physical, emotional and cognitive health.

Yet what is not addressed is why some women have more fluctuations and imbalance compared to others and what we could do to decrease this imbalance.

What may contribute to this is:

  1. our lack of understanding of the menopause transition.
  2. the neglect of the impact of our lifestyle, and the stressful society we live in, on our hormone levels, and that many of us live in a state of chronic stress.
  3. the lack of acknowledgement of the menopause transition creates changes in our body, which means we need to make changes to find a new normal.

Estrogen is essential for regulating many bodily functions. There are 3 types of estrogen produced in our body.

1. Estradiol (E2)
  • Most potent form of estrogen and the primary estrogen in women during their reproductive years.
  • Produced primarily in the ovaries
  • Estradiol is also involved in bone health, cardiovascular function, and brain function.
  • During perimenopause and menopause, estradiol levels decline significantly as ovarian function decreases.
2. Estrone (E1)
  • Weaker form of estrogen compared to estradiol.
  • Mainly produced after menopause in smaller amounts, primarily in fat tissue and the adrenal glands.
  • Estrone is also present in premenopausal women, but it plays a less significant role than estradiol during the reproductive years.
  • After menopause, estrone becomes the dominant form of estrogen, but because it is weaker, the effects of estrogen in the body are not as strong as they were during a woman’s reproductive years.
3. Estriol (E3)
  • The weakest form of estrogen.
  • Estriol is the dominant estrogen during pregnancy, as it is primarily produced by the placenta. It helps to maintain the pregnancy by promoting uterine blood flow and supporting fetal development.
  • After pregnancy, estriol is present in smaller amounts in the body, but it plays a less important role compared to estradiol and estrone in non-pregnant women.
  • Estriol is sometimes used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for its milder effects, though it’s not as commonly used as estradiol.

When estrodiol levels in the ovaries drop in menopause, our adrenals take over the production of estrogen in the form of estrone.

However, if we are in a state of stress, and many of us are in a chronic state of stress, our body produces more cortisol, which is given a priority over estrogen.

Our body is designed to go through menopause and the fact that we are struggling with it means we need to do a deep dive into why. However, this approach may not be for everyone.

We won’t go into HRT or MRT (hormone replacement therapy for menopause) here. While hormonal therapy helps women significantly with the terrible symptoms of menopause, it doesn’t necessarily reduce all the symptoms we experience during the menopause transition. And some women don’t want to or are not able to do hormone therapy.

This is where it is time to become a menopause detective. Where is this imbalance coming from? Why is my body not coping? How can I bring it into balance? How is my lifestyle be contributing to this hormonal imbalance? These are just a few questions we can ask ourselves.

Maybe just a few lifestyle tweaks will reduce the symptoms, or we might need a massive overhaul. We might need to do a menopause makeover!

Is your body a well-oiled machine?

I am using the a car analogy here. Like a car, when our body is running well, we have no symptoms. When it is struggling, we will see symptoms. And menopause is a massive transition for us and we need the resources to be able to go through this change otherwise we will really struggle with the menopause transition.

We then need to find out how to make changes and then, how do we commit to making the changes to heal.

And these changes might need to be huge. For example, many women are already leaving their work places because of menopausal symptoms. They feel like they can no longer function at the cognitive level they did previously.

But it also might be that we do need to slow down at this time, to be reflective and ask the question – who am I, what is important to me, what do i want my life to look like going forward. What works for me and what no longer serves me?

The truth is, life is challenging. Add menopause on top of this – life can become volcanic. While holistic medicine is powerful, the commitment to go on this journey is big. It takes effort, it takes commitment. Some of the things we need to consider include:

  • Lifestyle Changes: This might include looking and work life balance; the need to slow down; engage in practices that soothe our nervous system.
  • Dietary Adjustments: Incorporating whole foods that promote hormonal balance and manage cortisol levels effectively. Emphasizing the importance of balanced nutrition and regular physical activity to enhance overall well-being.
  • Emotional and spiritual considerations – Women tend to be primary care givers, often at the expense of their own health and wellbeing. Menopause is often a time to reflect on how you can start to prioritise your own needs.

Holistic treatment options can complement traditional therapies. These may include:
